Taiwan New Culture Movement Memorial Hall special issue: CALL FOR NEW 1
"Registration" (掛號) can answer contemporary Taiwan in two ways:
Registered mail at the post office lets people receive the latest news by hand, carry the deepest feelings and build good connections; registration at the hospital takes people through consultation, diagnosis and medicine back to a healthy life. Like the members of the Taiwan Cultural Association back then, who hoped through different paths (the parliamentary petition movement to win people's rights, cultural education to open people's minds) to let those born and living in Taiwan become masters of their own lives, the first step may be that we can finally begin to ask: Who are we? Where do we come from? Where are we going?
And then begin to "tell our own culture with our own mouths."
In this moment of many intertwined cultures, on a stage where old and new history merge, we are still searching for what kind of Taiwan Taiwan wants to become, and what kind of us we want to become. It is because of every Taiwanese person of that time, every one who bravely told their own story, that we and Taiwan are who we are now. So we still need to write our own words, sing our own music, stage our own plays and paint our own homeland, to explore, to practise and to record.
In this opening special issue of the Taiwan New Culture Movement Memorial Hall, we wanted to use some different approaches so that the hall's publication is more than a publication: through connections to the present, readers can rediscover early twentieth-century Taiwan, understand the past from now, and then think about the future.
In the design, we wanted Registration to be not just a publication,
but a story.
From the outside in, the outer packaging stands for a registered parcel,
carrying the heat of the New Culture Movement.
So in the design of the parcel we also buried many codes,
weaving in many elements from the New Culture Movement period.

Delivery note 120-122E, 22-25N
The concept comes from Chiang Wei-shui's well-known essay "Clinical Lecture," which prescribes a nutritional therapy of knowledge to treat Taiwan; it is one of the most important texts of Taiwan's New Culture Movement.
The essay opens: "Name: Taiwan Island. Address: 120 to 122 degrees east longitude, 22 to 25 degrees north latitude." The idea is to send this registered parcel to Taiwan.
Registration extends that idea: bringing in new knowledge like a registered parcel, and, like Dr. Chiang Wei-shui's registration for treatment, healing through the import of culture.

Postmark
The postmark of the Peacock Western Café at the 1930 Taiwan Exposition, evoking the leisure spaces and lifestyle of the intellectuals of the time.

Barcode number 1212432
The numbered musical notation of "Our Taiwan," a Taiwanese-language song by Tsai Pei-huo that portrays the island and was an important local song of the time.

The weight of knowledge: 19.23 KG
The 1923 Public Order Police Incident was a political incident of the Japanese colonial period in Taiwan, led by the Police Bureau of the Government-General:
41 people were arrested and 58 summoned, 99 persecuted in all, and 18 of them were prosecuted.

LOGO = 咱 ("us")
The Taiwan New Culture Movement Memorial Hall logo is built from the characters 口 (mouth) and 自 (self),
symbolizing the core spirit of "telling our own culture with our own mouths."
Opening the parcel reveals the publication, which stands for the nutritional therapy of knowledge.
Opening it from the front, readers first see a newspaper from the old days; for anyone not yet familiar with the upheavals of the 1920s to the 1940s,
reading the New Culture Express shows the passion of that era.
Next comes the feature "A New Wave of the New Culture Movement,"
with several contemporary "cultural guides":
張鐵志, 王聰威, 凌可樂, 柯智豪, 呂柏伸 and 方序中,
each from a different angle, literature, music, theatre and fine art,
telling the stories they are living now in the fields they love.
